Pfizer Inc. has received FDA approval to sell Propecia, a medication used to treat male pattern baldness. In a press release, its chief executive, Mark Cuban, said that the company was “delaying its planned next few months by an average of 15 months, and is looking for other ways to fund its plan to invest in this important health product.”
The new drug will not be available until late 2018 and could only be purchased by prescription. The company will also have to spend $4 million to purchase the generic version of the medication.
“We are very optimistic about this product, and we are continuing to see significant growth potential from Propecia,” said Robert V. Vos, a professor of business administration at the University of California, Los Angeles.
The FDA approval was announced last November, and it was the largest drug approval since the first FDA-approved drugs, called finasteride, were introduced in 1997.
Pfizer will receive approval from the FDA for the generic version of the medication in late 2018.

A new study finds that some prescription hair loss treatments could be cheaper than the popular hair loss treatments.
But is the study right?
The study looked at the sales of the popular hair loss medication finasteride, which is sold as Propecia.
Finasteride is taken once a day by a doctor and works by blocking the conversion of testosterone to dihydrotestosterone (DHT). DHT causes hair loss and can also cause balding and male pattern baldness. The study's authors say that this type of hair loss can be permanent.
They also say that the use of finasteride could be harmful to patients if taken as prescribed, or if the patient has a history of prostate cancer or if they are having a hereditary or adrenal disease.
Finasteride can be taken to treat benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), a condition in which the prostate gland becomes enlarged, causing urinary problems. Prostate cancer is a rare but aggressive form of cancer, which affects up to 1 in 10 men.

Finasteride has been the subject of several studies in the past. The FDA's approval of finasteride in 1992 changed the way some medications are approved. These medications are approved for hair loss purposes, but they can also be used to treat BPH, which is caused by prostate cancer.
A few years ago, the American Academy of Dermatology published guidelines for hair loss treatment that suggested that patients take finasteride for two years before the use of minoxidil. However, a new study in the Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology finds that some men taking finasteride have a slightly higher risk of having prostate cancer compared to those taking minoxidil.
While the study found no increased risk of prostate cancer for men taking finasteride, researchers said it may be because of a difference in dosing.
The study also found that men who took finasteride for hair loss had a higher risk of having high-grade prostate cancer.
However, the findings were based on a meta-analysis of four studies involving more than 2,000 men with prostate cancer.
In one study of 1,100 men, the risk of prostate cancer was 1.1 times that of finasteride users. Another one of 1,100 men who took finasteride had a greater than 5.5-fold risk of having high-grade prostate cancer. The higher risk was seen in men who took the medication for hair loss, and those who took finasteride were more likely to have high-grade cancer.
The researchers said the findings may be related to the use of finasteride in men with BPH, as finasteride is more effective than minoxidil, which is taken once a day, by doctors and other health care professionals. This study, however, didn't examine the impact of finasteride on prostate cancer.
Dr. Michael W. Hays, M. D., an assistant professor of dermatology at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, said that the new study was "not a definitive conclusion" but suggested that finasteride might be safe for patients who have low levels of prostate cancer risk.
"It's important to note that patients who have high-grade prostate cancer may still be at increased risk of prostate cancer. In this case, finasteride should be considered for men who have high-risk prostate cancer," said Hays.
If you're concerned about the risks of prostate cancer in men taking finasteride, Dr. Hays added, it's important to discuss the issue with a urologist.
"The risk of prostate cancer in men taking finasteride may be lower if the prostate is well developed and smaller than the typical size of the prostate," he said.
The findings were published in the Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology, a peer-reviewed, international journal of dermatology.
